Prayerful wishes from Bishop Amalraj.
LENT 
Lent is the 40-day season of penance in preparation for the greatest event in human history: the redemption of the human race by Jesus Christ. Lent begins this year on Ash Wednesday, February 17, and ends on Easter Sunday, April 4. Let us meditate on the thoughts of St. John Maria Vianney on the pillars of Lent viz., prayer, fasting and almsgiving.
Prayer
See my children; the treasure of a Christian is not on the earth, it is in Heaven. Well, our thoughts ought to be where our treasure is. Man has a beautiful office, that of praying and loving. You pray, you love–that is the happiness of man upon the earth. Prayer is nothing else than union with God. When our heart is pure and united to God, we feel within ourselves a joy, a sweetness that inebriates, a light that dazzles us. In this intimate union God and the soul are like two pieces of wax melted together; they cannot be separated. This union of God with His little creature is a most beautiful thing. It is a happiness that we cannot understand.
Fasting and Penance
The priest of Ars subjected himself to a strict fast. In this way he sought to reduce the requirements of his life to minimum. One meal sufficed him for the whole day. Regarding mortification, he once said, “My friend, the devil is not greatly afraid of the discipline and other instruments of penance. That which beats him is the curtailment of one’s food, drink and sleep. There is nothing the devil fears more, consequently, nothing is more pleasing to God. Oh! How often have I experienced it! Whilst I was alone – and I was alone during eight or nine years, and therefore quite free to yield to my attraction – it happened at times that I refrained from food for entire days. On those occasions I obtained, both for myself and for others, whatsoever I asked of Almighty God.”
Almsgiving
When we must do something we dislike, let us say to God, " My God I offer You this in honor of the moment when You died for me."
VISIT OF GERMAN BENEFACTORS:
Our German benefactors, Fr. Alex Vagal, Parish Priest of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Deburg, 
Mr. Herbert Prokosch & Mrs. Margit Prokosch and Miss. Tamara paid a visit to our Diocese from 8th January to 15th January. They are all from Deburg, Germany. They have been helping our diocesan orphanages since the time of Bishop Aruldas James. They had also rendered financial assistance towards the construction of churches at Pandalur and Kothamangalam. 
They are having an association called “Missionskries St. Peter und Paul” through which they are helping our diocese.
During their first trip to India, they visited the Mercy Home at Nanjanad, Pandalur church, Vadavalli Shrine, Kothamangalam Church and orphanages at Naduvattam, Gundri and at Peria Kodiveri. Fr. Alex Vagal blessed the land at Mettupalayam. They left to Germany on 15th January. Miss. Tamara stays back in our Diocese to do some social work. She will be in Naduvattam till 21st March 2010. 
Our German benefactors were very happy to be with us and they appreciated the service that we are rendering to our faithful. The diocese of Ootacamund is ever grateful to our benefactors who always help our diocese. I thank Frs. Gaspar, C. J. Joseph, Alexander Matthew, Thomas Valiyil, Ravi Lawrence, Antony Raj, John Joseph Stanis, Henry Maria Louis, Henry Robert, Paschal Jagan Raj and the fathers in the Bishop’s House and the religious sisters who received them with warm welcome.
RECOLLECTION
There will be monthly recollection on 9th February at Sathy and on 16th February at Ooty. All the priests are expected to present themselves in the respective places without fail unless there is grave reason with prior permission.

CLERGY SANCTIFICATION DAY
We shall have Clergy Sanctification Day at Bishop’s House followed by Chrism Mass in the Cathedral on 23rd March 2010. Fathers are requested to take note and be present without fail.
CBCI MEETING 2010
The CBCI Meeting will be in Guwahati from 22nd February to 5th of March. Since I will take part in the meeting, I will be away on those days. I request you to pray for the successful outcome of the meeting.
PROVINCE LEVEL GET-TOGETHER OF PRIESTS
As it was announced earlier, the province level get together of Priests of Madras Province takes place on 8th April 2010. Forty priests are expected to attend this gathering. So, give your names to Msgr. Antony Swamy during the monthly recollection so that it will be easy for us to book the tickets.
HOLY CHILDHOOD DAY
I request all the parish priests to celebrate the Holy Childhood Day on 14th Feb. The Society of Holy Childhood is helping four diocesan orphanages and some orphanages run by the religious sisters as well as various developmental works in our schools. Children below the age of 14 are the beneficiaries of this Pontifical Mission Society. Explain the importance of this day on the previous Sunday to the faithful to contribute generously on 14th. The collection on that day should be forwarded to the procurator.

Ooty Vicariate:
- Masinagudi
i. Science Exhibition:
Science exhibition was conducted in Child Jesus English Medium School, Masinagudi from on 20th January. It was for the first time such exhibition was conducted. Theme of the exhibition was Global Warming Around 500 people visited the exhibition. Parents of the children took interest to do the models. Our sincere appreciation to Fr. Charles Babu, Correspondent & Principal, Staff, Students and the Parents.
ii. New Compound Wall:
New compound wall has been constructed around the campus of at Child Jesus English Medium School and the Church. Due to this compound wall invasion of people and cattle to the campus is stopped. The amount spent for this project was generated from the agricultural income and from the parish and income of the school.
2. Year for Priests Celebrations at St. Mary’s, Ooty
On 26th January 2010, on the colorful occasion, Year for Priests was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Ooty. The Parish Council members and faithful of this parish took initiative to invite all the priests of our Diocese. Around fifty priests participated in the celebration. It showed the love of the people towards priests. The function also highlighted the faithfulness of priests to their call they have received. Our appreciations to Fr. A. John PP and Fr. Antony V. V. who encouraged the faithful for this wonderful celebration.
3. New Bus at Rex:
A new bus has been purchased for Rex. Senior Sec. School, Ooty. It is a 57 seater bus. It was blessed on 27th January 2010 by Most Rev. Dr. A. Amalraj. Congratulations to Fr. John Joseph, Correspondent who works hard and takes positive steps to bring up this institution.

25.12.09 அன்று காலை 9.30 மணிக்கு புனித அந்தோணியார் ஆலயம் கொதுமுடி பங்கில் இளையோர் சந்திப்பும், புதியகுழு பற்றிய கருத்துரையும் வழங்கப்பட்டது. ஏறக்குறைய பதினாறு இளைஞர் இளம் பெண்கள் பங்கேற்றனர்.
28 ரூ 30.12.09 அன்று புனித மைக்கேல் அதிதூதர் ஆலயம் மைக்கேல் பாளையம் பங்கில் இளைஞர்கள் சந்திப்பு, புதிய குழு பற்றிய தெளிவும் இளைஞர்களுக்கு ஒப்புரவு அருட்சாதனமும் அளிக்கப்பட்டது. இதில் ஏறக்குறைய 40 இளைஞர்கள் பங்கேற்றனர்.
01.01.2010 அன்று பூதப்பாடி பங்கின் கிளைப்பங்கான உமாரெட்டியூரில் திருப்பலியும், இளைஞர்கள் சந்தி;ப்பும் நடைபெற்றது.

- ஜனவரி 10ம் நாள் வெலிங்டன் பங்கைச் சார்ந்த பராஸ்ட்டேல் கிளைப்பங்கில் கிறித்தவ வாழ்வுரிமை இயக்கத் தேர்தல் திரு ரபேல், ஜேம்ஸ், சாலமோன் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்றது. இதில் ஐந்து பொறுப்பாளர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டனர்.
- ஜனவரி 10ம் நாள் மதியம் 2 மணியளவில் குன்னூர் வட்டாரக் கிறித்தவ வாழ்வுரிமை இயக்க கூட்டம் நடைபெற்றது. வருகிற பிப்ரவரி 28ம் நாள் ஒரு பேரணியும், பொதுக்கூட்டமும் நடத்தத் தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டது. அதைப் பொறுப்பேற்று நடத்தும் 13 பேர் கொண்ட போராட்டக் குழுவும் அமைக்கப்பட்டது.
- ஜனவரி 17ம் நாள் ஊட்டி புனித மரியன்னை ஆலயக் கிளைப்பங்கான முள்ளிக்கொரையில் கிறித்தவ வாழ்வுரிமை இயக்கத் தேர்தல் திரு சாலமன் தலைமையில் நடைபெற்றது. ஐந்து பொறுப்பாளர்கள் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டனர்.
- ஜனவரி 24ம் நாள் சின்னபள்ளம் பங்கில் கிறித்தவ வாழ்வுரிமை இயக்கத் தேர்தல் நடத்தப்பட்டு ஐந்து பேர் பொறுப்பாளர்களாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டனர்.
- ஜனவரி 31ம் நாள் சூசைபுரம் பங்கில் கிறித்தவ வாழ்வுரிமை இயக்கத் தேர்தல் நடத்தப்பட்டு ஐந்து ஆண்கள் மற்றும் ஐந்து பெண்கள் பொறுப்பாளர்களாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப்பட்டனர்.
- ஜனவரி 26ம் நாள் பாய்ஸ் கம்பெனியில் கிறித்தவ வாழ்வுரிமை இயக்க நிர்வாகக்குழுக் கூட்டம் நடைபெற்றது. கூட்டத்தில் பேரணி பற்றிய திட்டமிடல் நடைபெற்றது.

- Sent interview cards to M.A. B. Ed Economics candidates. Thirteen who have registered here for the post of Economics teacher in St. Joseph’s Hr. Sec. School, Ooty. The interview is on 8th February, Monday.
- The teachers’ retreat for Ooty and Coonoor vicariates was conducted on 30th Jan Saturday, at St. Joseph’s Hr. Sec. School, Ooty.
- The teachers’ retreat for Gudalur Vicariate will be on February 20th Saturday, at St. Mary’s High School, Gudalur.
- Glad to inform you all that Little Flower Primary School, Selas, was selected for “The Best School Award” among aided schools in the Nilgiris District. Hearty congrats to the Sisters of Cluny, the staff and the students.
